Discovery Pompeii
Pompeii, is the most fascinating and famous archaeological site in the world. Vesuvius in 79 AD buried the city under a blanket of ash and lapilli nearly 10 meters thick. Most of the inhabitants, fleeing their homes, found death on the shoreline. The few who remained, tried to save themselves in the basements of their homes, dying of asphyxiation. In fact, casts of their bodies, are a shocking testimony to the tragedy. You will walk through time: you will experience the atmosphere of life in antiquity. One of the most important buildings in Pompeii is the Villa of the Mysteries, famous especially for its paintings. Exciting is a visit to the Via dei Sepolcri, the street lined with funerary monuments that led toward Herculaneum.
The breathtaking Herculaneum
Herculaneum was submerged by a flow of mud and lava. King Charles of Bourbon ordered in 1738 the official start of excavations. In 1927 excavation of the dwellings and public buildings began: the Forum to the north, was the center of economic, social and political life, to the east the Palestra, and to the south the Baths. Wealthy Romans spent their vacations in Herculaneum, as evidenced by the villas facing the sea. The streets, paved with Vesuvian lava or limestone, outline the characteristic island layout. One of the city’s finest mansions is the mosaic Atrium House, which gets its name from its black and white floor. The Forum Baths were the city’s main public baths. Outside the walls are the Suburban Baths. The Villa of the Papyri, only partially excavated, can be visited. A visit to the Herculaneum excavations takes 1 hour and 45 minutes.
